Sleep talking, is a time old object of perception and how to stop sleep talking has been a matter of grave concern for some. It has been mentioned in some renowned classics like William Shakespeare’s famous melodrama ‘Othello’.

In Act 4 scene 1, the villain; Iago incites Othello, by mentioning the sleep talking of Cassio about the infidelity of his wife;

Or voluntary dotage of some mistress,

   Convinced or supplied them, cannot choose

   But they must blab_______”

 

Why do they blab? 

 

If you want to make others stop sleep talking, you have to know first the cause of their blabbing. It is in fact the blabbing or the habit of nattering that continues in sleep to divulge the untold stories. It is an overflow of those thoughts in sleep which had been kept carefully guarded during daytime. Thinking and imagination is the only thing which is free for all in this world. When your imagination too is kept behind bars, on account of the social taboos, what else you can resort to except sleep talking.

Sleep talking prevails quite frequently among children and is experienced by adolescents and young adults too. Occurrence of sleep talking in adults and elderly men and women is not frequent as they have another optional way out, of soliloquy or talking to themselves.   Soliloquists do not need audience therefore day or night or the state of being awake or sleep does not matter for them. For a normal person however, it is binding to exercise control over the speech and in order to comply with this requirements some thoughts have to be kept suppressed. It is the excess of these suppressed thoughts that overflows in night as sleep talking.

Control over speech is important and when it comes to sleep talking it is more important to first curb the inner noise in whatsoever form it may be. Prattling, nattering, blathering and similar types of superfluous and senseless talking are all inner noises expressed openly by some and suppressed by others for fear of distortion of their social image. It is this second category which is more prone to sleep talking and needs advice.

 

How to Stop Sleep Talking 

 

  • Try to say what you mean and when you can not say it, write it and even if    you can’t do that, draw or paint it. 
  • Free writing is a way to ease out the inner suppressed thoughts. 
  • To stop sleep talking, start talking when awake. 
  • Catharsis is the key to successfully stop sleep talking. Purging and purification of the inner self will relieve you of this discomfort. 
  • Avoid stress, enjoy eating and sleep on time. Avoid sleeping in day. 
  • People, who use insulting words in day, do not sleep talk. This doesn’t mean that you have learn more of the insulting words, but to tell that just don’t keep your words under the rug. Just speak out when they ought to be spoken.
